Okay, I have reservations about the concept of copyright, and I’m not super thrilled that what Anthropic is settling on is having pirated books, rather than the fact itself that it fed them to its models without permission—the idea that training LLMs can be considered fair use if a book is acquired legally, ragardless of permission, is absolute cowdung. I guess the upside of not having published a bestseller is that it was easier for it to be ingested as part of a large-scale piracy operation. And if that’s what Anthropic is paying for, I’m fine with it. It’s never going to be enough, but it’s a great start.
